5 Suffolk ParadeRemarkably, this property was, until 2018, in the butcher's trade for more than 165 years!
The first recorded butcher here was Mr E. Turner in 1850. He had been replaced by 1857 by John Barratt, then in 1865 by W.H. Warner. From 1875 to around 1890 Caudle & Sons were the butchers here and they were followed first by Mr T. Fryer and then Charles Fryer, pork butchers, until at least 1917. Charles Fryer died at Leckhampton in 1922, aged 80. Number 5 Suffolk Parade was offered for sale in April 1919 and was sold soon after for £440. The new proprietor was Mr Charles Waltham, who was born near Swindon Village in 1888 and served with the Royal Artillery in France during the First World War. Mr Waltham still employed a pony and trap to make deliveries around the area when on 1st February 1933 it was involved in a minor accident with a car, at the junction of Norwood Road and Grafton Road. The pony was knocked over but got up and bolted down Norwood Road, chased by the trap driver. Unfortunately for Mr Waltham, the car owner was found not to have been at fault and he had to pay damages to her of £2,10 shillings (£2.50). ![]() Charles Waltham died in 1947 and was succeeded in the business by his son Eric. The name Waltham was associated with the shop for longer than anyone else so far. Then, around 1985, the butcher's shop was taken over by M.J. and J.A. Watts. They were here until 20th March 2018, when the trade changed to a gentlemen's barber shop called Suffolk Barbers.
