4, Great Norwood StreetIn 1825 the site upon which these premises stand, part of a large field called the 'Grattons' or 'Grottons', was acquired by a builder called John Knight. The title deeds state that he held the land in trust for William Baylis.
Mr Baylis may have intended to develop the site but died in 1847, without apparently achieving this ambition. The Old Town Survey map of 1855-57 shows the land had still not yet been built upon. Formerly Balthazaar Hairdressers, these premises were taken over in July 2017 by Paco and Carolyn Delgado to become El Barbero, a gentlemen's barber shop. Paco, who comes originally from Gran Canaria, has lived and worked in Cheltenham since 1982. He had his first salon in Cambray Place, before moving to 154 High Street and then to Montpellier. He also owns the ladies hairdresser nearby in Suffolk Road that bears his name.
In the autumn of 2020 El Barbero relocated to 42 Suffolk Road and these premises became home to Baby Face Cheltenham, a beauty boutique. Research: Stuart Manton (Jan 2023)
