About the website...
This website belongs to Cheltenham Local History Society and forms part of the Cheltenham South Town history project.
The project was co-founded by Cheltenham Connect and St Philip and St James Area Residents Association (SPJARA) in 2009, with contributions from both Leckhampton and Cheltenham local history societies, with the twin aims of building upon the sense of community and to promote local shopping.
Until 2023 the project continued to be sponsored by Cheltenham Connect and it was then adopted by Cheltenham Local History Society. Special thanks are due to local historians and residents Marilyn West, the late Brian Torode, Jill Waller, Karen Wilson, Vic Cole, Eric Miller, the late Michael Dower, Wendy Ellyatt, Stuart Manton and many others, for their contributions.
Except where otherwise indicated, the sources of the historical information include the Cheltenham Local Studies Library, the Gloucestershire Archives, Find My Past, the British Newspaper Archive and the Gloucestershire Echo. Images are credited where possible.
The Cheltenham Old Town Survey (1855-57) map is used by permission of Gloucestershire Archives, Cheltenham Borough Council and Cheltenham Local History Society.
The website designer was Graham Boston and local illustrator Jane Farrar produced the maps.
