Gurnsey Cottages
Sheila Mason has kindly supplied the following information about Gurnsey Cottages, which in the early 19th century occupied part of the site which now forms the Co-operative Food store.
"My 3rd great grandfather, Thomas Huntley, born in Cheltenham 1790, returned to Cheltenham after a period of time in Upton Upon Severn. He was a bootmaker and according to the 1861 census and was living in 10 Gurnsey cottages (Bath Rd). Interestingly, a Stephen Hale, bootmaker lived at No. 9, Frederick Jones, bootmaker lived at No. 9, Charles Lewis, a bootmaker, lived at No. 8 and John Caudle, a bootmaker also, lived at No. 4. I cannot find any info re Gurnsey cottages. Thomas died in 1866 in Cheltenham."
