22 Suffolk Road (formerly 11 Northwick Terrace)In 1861 this was the home of Mr Philmore, a butcher. Between 1901 and 1905 Alfred Henry Caudle, his wife Elizabeth and young sons Frank and Harold lived here. Alfred described himself as a watchmaker's clerk and confectioner, whilst Elizabeth was a milliner. It isn't clear that the premises included a shop at that time but by 1919 this had become a confectioner and tobacconist belonging to Mabel Clare and her husband Albert.
The Clares were here in 1940, when the house next door was destroyed in an air raid and the building at this address was badly damaged, causing it to be demolished. By 1950 a new building had been erected and the whole of 18-22 Suffolk Road was occupied by Leckhampton Estates Ltd. They were still here in 1975. |
